Celebrate 50 Years of Summerfolk at Grey Roots

Grey Roots Museum & Archives invites the public to experience 50 Years of Summerfolk, a celebratory exhibit honouring five decades of music, community, and creativity.

50 Years of Summerfolk traces the evolution of the beloved Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival—from its grassroots beginnings in a muddy field to its current status as a cornerstone of Canadian folk culture. Visitors will be immersed in the sights and sounds of the festival, with a specially curated playlist featuring performances by Summerfolk artists past and present.

The exhibit showcases a rich collection of archival and contemporary photographs, including exceptional images by festival photographer John Fearnall that capture iconic scenes and familiar faces long-time "folkies" will instantly recognize. These photographs highlight the important contributions of volunteers and the enduring spirit of the Summerfolk community.

“As an avid Summerfolk attendee for many years, this was one of my favourite exhibits to research and develop,” says Sim Salata, Curator at Grey Roots. “It was a pleasure to work with Summerfolk staff and volunteers as we sorted through dozens of photos and identified many musicians and volunteers from years past.”

Whether you're a lifelong attendee or discovering the festival for the first time, 50 Years of Summerfolk offers a heartfelt journey through the melodies and memories that have made the event a cherished tradition.

The exhibit runs through August 31 in Moreston Heritage Village, open daily through the summer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is included with regular museum admission.
