Busy ROMA Conference ahead for Grey County
The 2026 Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference is happening January 18 to 20 in Toronto, bringing together nearly 2,000 municipal leaders from across the province to discuss the most pressing issues facing rural communities. Grey County councillors and senior staff will be attending, participating in the conference programming, and taking part in eight delegation meetings with provincial ministries.
“The ROMA Conference is a valuable opportunity for rural municipalities to come together, learn from each other, and explore innovative solutions to the issues that matter most in our communities. The conversations, expertise shared, and insights gained ensure we return home with stronger networks and practical ideas we can put into action for the residents of Grey County,” said Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs.
This year’s program includes sessions on trade relations between Canada and the United States, health and human resources in seniors’ care, the AMO Healthy Democracy campaign, among other topics. Delegates will also hear from provincial leaders, including Premier Doug Ford and members of his cabinet, opposition leader Marit Stiles (Ontario NDP), Mike Schreiner (Ontario Green Party), and Ted Hsu (Ontario Liberal Party).
As part of the plenary program, Warden Matrosovs – who also serves on the Board of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative – will be participating in the panel Leading the Way on Ontario’s Economic Resilience. The session will explore rural response to a changing trade landscape and how all levels of government can work together to strengthen Ontario’s economic potential.
Outside of the main program, Grey County representatives will attend delegation meetings with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Attorney General, Ministry of Long-Term Care, Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security. Key topics to be discussed include Conservation Authority changes, housing development, provincial offences court security costs, support for Georgian College Owen Sound Campus, long-term care, access to healthcare, and more.
