The Alpha Street housing community in Owen Sound is one of Grey County’s largest affordable housing properties. Originally built in the 1969, the homes were showing their age.

In 2015, Grey County committed to revitalizing Alpha Street through a variety of projects. In total, more than $1 million has been invested into the units and property to ensure many more families and singles can continue enjoying safe and affordable housing for years to come. An additional $475,000 was received from the Social Housing Improvement program from the Province. This money was put towards new roofs.

Highlights of projects

  • $1 million invested over three years
  • Upgraded insulation
  • Waterproofing foundations
  • Extended patios and dividers
  • Improved lighting
  • Improved security
  • Landscaping
  • Window replacements
  • Painting
  • New roofs

Grey County is also working towards bring free Wi-Fi to the 68 households too ensure residents and children living at Alpha Street have access to online opportunities to learn and succeed.

Alpha Street Pavilion

In June of 2016, community volunteers, partners and county staff came together to build a youth engagement pavilion for the Alpha Street community. The newly created space is used for a variety of activities and to store games and equipment. It also features a “graffiti chalk wall” for drawing and a white wall to watch movies outdoors.

The project was made possible through a $10,000 Community Foundation Grey Bruce Grant.

A group of volunteers work together to raise the first wall on pavilion.
