The Alpha Street housing community in Owen Sound is one of Grey County’s largest affordable housing properties. Originally built in the 1969, the homes were showing their age. 

In 2015, Grey County committed to revitalizing Alpha Street through a variety of projects. In total, more than $1 million has been invested into the units and property to ensure many more families and singles can continue enjoying safe and affordable housing for years to come. An additional $475,000 was received from the Social Housing Improvement program from the Province. This money was put towards new roofs.

Grey County is also working towards bring free Wi-Fi to the 68 households too ensure residents and children living at Alpha Street have access to online opportunities to learn and succeed.


Alpha Street Pavilion

In June of 2016, community volunteers, partners and county staff came together to build a youth engagement pavilion for the Alpha Street community. The newly created space is used for a variety of activities and to store games and equipment. It also features a “graffiti chalk wall” for drawing and a white wall to watch movies outdoors.

The project was made possible through a $10,000 Community Foundation Grey Bruce Grant.

Coordinated Rural Transportation

Grey County's large landscape is one of our greatest assets, but, if you don't have access to an affordable means of transportation, it can also be a major barrier.

Age-Friendly Communities Study

We want Grey County to be inclusive and welcoming to people of all ages and abilities. We recently partnered with students from the University of Guelph to look at policies that better support youth and older adults.

Green in Grey - Natural Environment Study

Grey County recently completed a Natural Heritage Study we called Green in Grey. The study identified key natural areas and linkages and recommended policies related to these features.

ATVs on County Roads Pilot

On September 6, 2016, Council approved a one-year pilot allowing the use of ATVs on many County Roads. The pilot was deemed a success and has been endorsed by Grey County Council.

From 2015-2017, Grey County paramedics embarked on a two-year clinical trial to study the effectiveness of community paramedicine in reducing emergency room visits by chronic disease patients.
