Scrap Tire Collection Program

The County had a need to enter into scrap tire collection to ensure the quality of the used tires received into its system.

Our primary source of used tires comes from retail tire dealerships, wrecking yards, and service stations. It is estimated that virtually all scrap tires enter the supply stream in this way. Our collection program focuses on retail tire dealerships and wrecking yards and thus secure most of the ongoing supply.

At the present time, all the retail tire outlets charge their customers a fee for the disposal of their used tires. Typically this is a combination of the local landfill charge plus the transportation costs. In the Owen Sound area the going rate is $3.00 per used passenger tire and somewhat less, perhaps $2.00 to $2.50 in the smaller towns.

The County presently charges a rate of $2.50 per tire for tires which are picked up at the local landfill sites, car dealers, tire dealers, etc. We use a 1/2 ton truck for pickup of these tires on a weekly basis which are then taken to the larger storage van. When this storage van is full, the tires are taken to a tire shredding and crumbing facility for processing to a size of crumb that meets our specifications.

This rubber crumb is then brought back to Grey County and used in our asphalt paving programs throughout the summer.
