What is a roundabout?
- A modern roundabout is an un-signalized circular intersection engineered to maximize safety and minimize traffic delay.
- All traffic circulates counter-clockwise within the roundabout always to the right of the central island.
- Traffic entering the roundabout must yield to traffic within the roundabout.
- These circular intersections improve road safety, manage increased traffic demand, and help improve air quality by eliminating unnecessary stops and idling.
- This single lane roundabout is 200 metres in diameter and can accommodate in excess of 3,000 vehicles an hour.
Characteristics of a Roundabout
- Low speed on approach
- Approaching vehicles yield to traffic within roundabout
- Vehicles drive counter-clockwise within roundabout
- Low speed on exit
- Continuous movement of traffic
Typical Signage for a Roundabout.
The Region of Waterloo has developed a Demonstration of a roundabout that shows how pedestrians, cyclists and motorists should travel through the intersection.
Another good example on roundabouts is located on the Province of British Columbia website.
