Road Jurisdiction

If you have a question or concern regarding a specific road, you will need to determine who owns and maintains that road.

There are 4 types of road systems located in Grey County.  Three of these are government run and maintained, the fourth is privately maintained.

There are five major highways in our area that are run by the Province of Ontario, these are Kings Highway 6, 10, 21, 26 and 89.  These roads fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and any issues or questions related to these roads should be directed to their office in Owen Sound at (519) 376-7350.  The purpose of the King’s Highway System is to provide connectors to major centres.  These roads appear in red on Grey County’s GIS Maps.

The Corporation of the County of Grey has jurisdiction over approximately 860 kilometres of roadways throughout the County.  County roads are intended to provide the same service as a King’s Highway, only on a smaller scale, connecting smaller centres of population and providing a continuous transportation network.  Originally these roads were intended to provide a “farm to market” road link.

Grey County’s roads are named in the following manner; Grey Road 1, Grey Road 2, Grey Road 3, etc.  The only exception to this rule is the Grey-Bruce Line, a boundary road shared with Bruce County.  Grey County roads are signed as seen in this photograph and are found in rural and urban centres.  These roads appear in yellow on Grey County’s GIS Maps. Any questions related to Grey County roads should be directed to (519) 376-7337 or can be submitted via e-mail.

The third type of road is the local road system that serves primarily the needs of the local population.  These roads fall under the jurisdiction of nine different local municipal road authorities within the County.  These roads act as the final link in the system providing access to abutting properties and subdivisions.   These local roads will have common names such as Henry Street, Concession 8, 3rd Line, Varney Road, etc.  For questions relating to these roads, you will need to contact the Local Municipality where the road is located.  One way to determine this is to use Grey County’s GIS mapping system.  These roads appear in black on the Grey County GIS Maps.  For information on how to use the mapping site, please review Using GIS.

The final type of roads found in Grey County is private roads.  These roads will be owned and maintained by an individual, group of property owners, or an organization.  These are usually found in private developments, waterfront or cottage areas.
