Grey County Joint Accessibility Plan

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, (ODA) 2001 was passed by the Provincial Government on September 30, 2002. The purpose of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) is to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities and to provide for their involvement in the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to their full participation in the life of the Province. To this end, the ODA mandates that each Municipality prepare an annual accessibility plan. Municipalities have the opportunity to prepare a Joint Plan with other interested Municipalities. The County of Grey Accessibility Plan is a joint initiative. The intent of this Plan is to improve barrier free accessibility for people in our communities.

On May 10, 2005, Ontario's legislative assembly passed Bill18, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA, 2005).  It took effect upon royal assent June 13, 2005.  This new Act is strong and effective legislation that will allow people with disabilities to participate in building a stronger province.

Additional Information regarding the AODA.

The ODA requires all municipalities to:

Develop an annual Accessibility Plan
Appoint an Accessibility Advisory Committee if over 10,000 in population
Make the Accessibility Plan available to the public

The Accessibility Plan describes the measures that the County has taken in the past and also measures that the County will take in the next twelve months by addressing the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to persons with disabilities in the municipality’s facilities, by-laws, policies, programs, practices and services.

The County of Grey and seven of our municipalities have worked with the Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee to develop the Joint Accessibility Plan. A copy of this Plan and the individual municipalities are available to the public below.
