Civic Addressing (911)

Emergency 9-1-1

Emergency 9-1-1 is the internationally recognized three-digit telephone number which is used to report an emergency or to request emergency assistance.  This emergency telephone number makes it faster and easier to reach police, fire, and ambulance services.  The County of Grey has implemented what is known as Enhanced 9-1-1 Public Emergency Reporting System.  This simply means that the name, address, and phone number of the 9-1-1 caller and the ambulance, police and fire departments which service the caller’s location are displayed to the call taker at the Owen Sound Police Services Board.  If for any reason the phone line is cut off or the 9-1-1 caller is unable to communicate, the location of the caller will still be displayed for the call taker, and emergency services will be dispatched to the location of the 9-1-1 call.  The Owen Sound Police Services Board will answer all 9-1-1 calls made from landlines in Grey County.

Individuals who are serviced by a 4-party line will receive 9-1-1 service.  However, the enhanced features are technically not available.  This means that the name, address, and phone number of the 9-1-1 caller will have to verbally explain their location by simply identifying their property address.  Knowing the property address of the caller will greatly assist emergency services finding the location of 9-1-1 callers who use a 4-party line system.
